Orquesta Típica Fernández Fierro

Orquesta Típica Fernández Fierro is a tango orchestra from Buenos Aires that formed in 1998 as the Orquesta Típica Fernández Branca and is described as founded under its present name in 2001 [1]. Its recordings include Envasado en origen (2002), Mucha mierda (2006), En vivo (2014), Ahora y siempre (2018) and Basta (2024) [1][2].

Orquesta Típica Fernández Fierro is a tango orchestra associated with Buenos Aires [1]. According to its encyclopedia entry, the group first formed in 1998 as the Orquesta Típica Fernández Branca, and most of its members were graduates of the Escuela de Música Popular de Avellaneda [1]. The same entry describes the orchestra as founded in Buenos Aires in 2001 as the Fernández Fierro, with Chino Laborde as singer [1]. Because the record gives both 1998 and 2001 as starting points, the year of origin depends on whether the earlier formation under a different name is counted [1].

The orchestra self-released its first album, Envasado en origen, in 2002 [1]. Its 2006 album Mucha mierda, recorded at the Biblioteca Nacional auditorium, was named among the year's ten best albums by La Nación [1]. Later releases included the live album En vivo in 2014, the studio album Ahora y siempre in 2018 and the studio album Basta in 2024 [1][2].

The orchestra also performed outside Argentina, with a showcase at WOMEX in Denmark in 2011 and appearances at European summer festivals, including Roskilde, in 2012 [1]. In 2015 it received a Konex diploma of merit as one of the five best tango ensembles of the decade [1].

History

The group's origins date to 1998, when it formed as the Orquesta Típica Fernández Branca [1]. Most of its members at that time were graduates of the Escuela de Música Popular de Avellaneda [1].

In 2001 the orchestra was founded in Buenos Aires under the name Fernández Fierro, with Chino Laborde as its singer [1]. The dossier sources therefore give two dates for the group's beginning: 1998 for the earlier formation as Fernández Branca, and 2001 for the founding as Fernández Fierro [1].

In 2002 the orchestra self-released its first album, Envasado en origen [1]. In 2006 it recorded Mucha mierda at the Biblioteca Nacional auditorium [1].

The orchestra's international activity included a showcase at WOMEX in Denmark in 2011 [1]. In 2012 it appeared at European summer festivals, among them Roskilde [1].

In 2014 the orchestra released the live album En vivo, recorded over two Wednesday nights in Buenos Aires [1]. Studio albums followed with Ahora y siempre in 2018 [1] and Basta in 2024 [2].

The orchestra's own website listed concerts scheduled for 2026 at the CAFF, at Teatro Doble T in La Plata and at Teatro Coliseo in Santiago de Chile [3].

Singers

The sources name three singers associated with the orchestra at different points [1][2]:

- Chino Laborde, named as singer when the group was founded as the Fernández Fierro in 2001 [1]. - Julieta Laso, who made her debut as the orchestra's singer on the 2014 live album En vivo [1]. - Yuri Venturín, singer on the 2024 studio album Basta [2].

Recordings

The orchestra's documented albums are [1][2]:

- Envasado en origen (2002), its first album, self-released [1]. - Mucha mierda (2006), recorded at the Biblioteca Nacional auditorium and named among the year's ten best albums by La Nación [1]. - En vivo (2014), a live album recorded over two Wednesday nights in Buenos Aires, with Julieta Laso as singer [1]. - Ahora y siempre (2018), a studio album [1]. - Basta (2024), a studio album with Yuri Venturín as singer [2].

Recognition

Mucha mierda (2006) was named by La Nación among the ten best albums of its year [1]. In 2015 the orchestra received a Konex diploma of merit as one of the five best tango ensembles of the decade [1].
