Orquesta Escuela de Tango

The Orquesta Escuela de Tango Emilio Balcarce is a pedagogical orchestra founded in 2000 by the culture secretariat of the City of Buenos Aires on a proposal by Ignacio Varchausky, with Emilio Balcarce as its first musical director. It trains successive cohorts of young musicians in the styles and arrangements of the Golden Age orchestras through two-year programs, open auditions, and direct contact with surviving masters, and has continued under later directors including Néstor Marconi and Víctor Lavallén.

In 2000 the Secretaría de Cultura of the City of Buenos Aires created the Orquesta Escuela de Tango following a proposal by double-bassist Ignacio Varchausky. The explicit purpose was to transmit the orchestral language, arrangements, and stylistic “yeites” of the Golden Age typical orchestras of the 1940s and 1950s to a new generation of instrumentalists at a moment when most of the original masters were elderly and the organic transmission of that practice had largely ceased. Emilio Balcarce, violinist, bandoneonist, arranger, and composer associated with the Pugliese tradition and author of pieces such as “La bordona” and “Si sos brujo,” was chosen as the first director. The project received support from musicians including Julián Plaza, Ernesto Franco, Horacio Salgán, Leopoldo Federico, and Alcides Rossi.

The curriculum is structured as a two-year program. Students are selected through open auditions and learn by performing original arrangements of the major historical orchestras while working alongside active musicians of the earlier generation and younger professionals. The first cohort graduated in December 2001. Early commercial recordings appeared on the Epsa Music label: “De contrapunto” (issued around 2000–2001) and “Bien compadre” (2004). In 2005 the orchestra and its founding process were the subject of the documentary film “Si sos brujo: una historia de tango,” directed by Caroline Neal. The film follows Varchausky’s effort to locate surviving maestros, the recruitment of the then eighty-seven-year-old Balcarce out of retirement, and the rehearsals and performances of the first students. It features appearances by Leopoldo Federico, Atilio Stampone, and others, and underscores the urgency expressed by participants that the knowledge would disappear with the remaining masters.

Balcarce continued as director until 2008, when he was ninety years old and stepped down; he was succeeded by Néstor Marconi. In subsequent years the musical direction passed to Víctor Lavallén, longtime bandoneonist and arranger associated with Osvaldo Pugliese, while Varchausky has remained artistic director and producer. The orchestra operates under the Dirección General de Enseñanza Artística of the city government. It has trained hundreds of musicians from Argentina and from countries including Uruguay, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, Belgium, Colombia, Mexico, France, the Netherlands, Korea, Germany, and Australia. Successive “camadas” (cohorts) continue to be formed by audition; by the mid-2020s the eighteenth cohort was entering the program. The repertoire regularly includes both classic Golden Age arrangements and new works by directors such as Lavallén.

The pedagogical model emphasizes collective orchestral practice rather than solo instruction alone. Students internalize articulation, phrasing, dynamic relationships, and the specific sonorities of the major historical ensembles by playing the original parts under the guidance of musicians who either participated in those ensembles or studied directly with their members. Public concerts, often held in venues such as the Salón Dorado of the Casa de la Cultura or the Centro Cultural Recoleta, present both the students and guest masters. The 2025–2026 period marked the orchestra’s twenty-fifth anniversary, celebrated with a live recording titled “25 años” drawn from the seventeenth cohort and special concerts featuring invited artists. The initiative has functioned as a central reference point for the transmission of traditional tango orchestral practice in the twenty-first century.

Founding and early years under Balcarce

Varchausky’s proposal to the city culture secretariat in 2000 responded to the approaching end of the generation that had played in the classic orchestras. Balcarce’s selection as director linked the project directly to the Pugliese lineage and to the compositional and arranging tradition represented by works such as “La bordona.” The two-year cycle and the December 2001 graduation of the first cohort established the institutional rhythm. The Epsa recordings “De contrapunto” and “Bien compadre” documented the early sound of the ensemble. The 2005 documentary “Si sos brujo,” filmed while Balcarce was still active, captured both the logistical challenges of assembling the project and the interpersonal dynamics between the elderly director and the young players.

Directorial succession and institutional continuity

Balcarce’s retirement at age ninety in 2008 led to Néstor Marconi’s appointment. Later the musical direction was assumed by Víctor Lavallén, whose arranging experience with Pugliese and whose continuing presence as a performing bandoneonist provided continuity with the same historical repertoire. Varchausky’s ongoing role as artistic director has maintained the original pedagogical conception. The orchestra’s placement within the city’s Dirección General de Enseñanza Artística has supplied institutional stability, open auditions, and regular public presentation opportunities across more than two decades.

Pedagogical method and international reach

The core method is immersion in original arrangements of Troilo, Pugliese, Di Sarli, D’Arienzo, Salgán, Federico, Fresedo, and other major ensembles. Students do not merely study scores; they rehearse and perform under the ear of musicians who carry the stylistic information. The two-year duration allows progressive absorption of ensemble habits. By the mid-2020s the program had produced eighteen cohorts and had attracted instrumentalists from more than a dozen countries. Concerts and recordings continue to serve both as training outcomes and as public demonstrations of the transmitted styles.

Recordings and public presence

The early Epsa discs remain the principal commercial documents of the Balcarce era. Later activity has included live recordings tied to anniversary events, such as the 2025 “25 años” release drawn from the seventeenth cohort. Regular seasons at city venues and participation in the broader tango calendar have kept the orchestra visible. The 2005 documentary continues to circulate as the principal audiovisual account of the founding moment and of the relationship between Varchausky, Balcarce, and the first students.
