Orquesta
Armando Pontier
Armando Pontier was a tango orchestra leader whose career is recorded in the available sources from the 1945 debut of the Francini-Pontier orchestra at the Tango Bar on Corrientes to his death in Belgrano on 25 December 1983 [1][3]. He debuted his own orchestra in 1955 with the singers Julio Sosa and Roberto Florio [1].
Armando Pontier's name is attached to two ensembles in the available sources: the Francini-Pontier orchestra, which debuted at the opening of the Tango Bar on Corrientes on 1 September 1945, and his own orchestra, which debuted on 1 September 1955 [1]. One source gives his date of birth as 29 August 1917 [4].
His own orchestra began with the singers Julio Sosa and Roberto Florio [1]. Over the following years the vocal line-up changed several times: Oscar Ferrari, Héctor Darío, Roberto Rufino, Alberto Podestá and Néstor Real all appear as his singers [2][3]. In the late 1950s the orchestra headlined the carnival dances at the Centro Asturiano and was resident on Radio Belgrano [3].
In the 1960s and 1970s Pontier played in Miguel Caló's Orquesta de las Estrellas, appeared in the film La diosa impura, re-formed his orchestra, and made tours of Japan [1][3]. He died at his flat in Belgrano on 25 December 1983 and was buried at Chacarita [3].
History
### The Francini-Pontier orchestra (1945)
The Francini-Pontier orchestra debuted at the opening of the Tango Bar on Corrientes on 1 September 1945 [1]. The available sources say nothing further about this ensemble, such as its personnel, its singers or how long it lasted [1].
### His own orchestra (1955–1961)
Pontier debuted his own orchestra on 1 September 1955, with Julio Sosa and Roberto Florio as singers [1]. In 1956 Oscar Ferrari replaced Roberto Florio [2]. In the late 1950s the orchestra headlined the carnival dances at the Centro Asturiano, with Sosa and Ferrari as singers, while it was also resident on Radio Belgrano [3]. Around 1960 Héctor Darío took over from Julio Sosa, and in 1961 Roberto Rufino followed Ferrari [3].
### Orquesta de las Estrellas and film (1963–1964)
In 1963 Pontier played in Miguel Caló's Orquesta de las Estrellas, alongside Francini, Domingo Federico, Podestá and Raúl Berón [3]. In 1964 he appeared in the film La diosa impura, directed by Armando Bo [1].
### Re-formation and tours of Japan (1966–1973)
In 1966 Pontier re-formed his orchestra with the singers Alberto Podestá and Héctor Darío [3]. That year he also toured Japan with Darío and Néstor Real [3]. In 1973 he reunited with Francini and the singer Alba Solís for another tour of Japan [3].
### Death
Pontier died at his flat in Belgrano on 25 December 1983 and was buried at Chacarita [3].
Singers
The sources name the following singers with Pontier's orchestra or tours, in order of first mention [1][2][3]:
- Julio Sosa: with the orchestra at its 1955 debut and at the late-1950s carnival dances at the Centro Asturiano; replaced by Héctor Darío around 1960 [1][3]. - Roberto Florio: with the orchestra at its 1955 debut; replaced by Oscar Ferrari in 1956 [1][2]. - Oscar Ferrari: joined in 1956; followed by Roberto Rufino in 1961 [2][3]. - Héctor Darío: took over from Sosa around 1960; with the re-formed orchestra in 1966 and on that year's tour of Japan [3]. - Roberto Rufino: followed Ferrari in 1961 [3]. - Alberto Podestá: with the re-formed orchestra in 1966 [3]. - Néstor Real: on the 1966 tour of Japan [3]. - Alba Solís: on the 1973 tour of Japan with Pontier and Francini [3].
Raúl Berón and Podestá are also named as fellow members of Miguel Caló's Orquesta de las Estrellas in 1963, not as singers of Pontier's own orchestra [3].
