Dancer

El Chino Perico

El Chino Perico is a tango dancer who began frequenting clubs, milongas and prácticas in his teens around 1950 and danced to the big orchestras at Defensores de Florida in the mid-1950s [2]. In later years he taught with Cecilia Bulotta [4], was presented as 'the last milonguero from Urquiza' [3], and was the subject of the 2020 short documentary 'A Tango with Chino Perico' [5].

El Chino Perico is a tango dancer whose dancing life, as set out in a profile by Irene Amuchástegui first published in Clarín, began in the milongas of the early 1950s [2]. That profile states that he started frequenting clubs, milongas and prácticas in his mid-teens, though it notes that the age given varies between 13 and 15 depending on the source [2].

He was filmed dancing from at least 2006 onward [3]. In 2011 he was interviewed as the partner of Cecilia Bulotta, with whom he taught private lessons [4]. In 2013 he was presented at PractiMilonguero as 'the last milonguero from Urquiza' [3]. In 2020 he was the subject of a short documentary, 'A Tango with Chino Perico' [5].

A video listing associates him with a large number of dance partners, among them Paola Tacchetti, Silvina Damian, Cecilia Bulotta and Malena Rodriguez [1].

Early years in the milongas

According to the profile reproduced on his blog, El Chino Perico began frequenting clubs, milongas and prácticas in his mid-teens, which the profile places around 1950 [2]. Sources differ on his exact age when he started, which is given as anywhere from 13 to 15 [2].

In the mid-1950s he danced to the big orchestras at Defensores de Florida [2]. The dossier does not name the orchestras he heard there [2].

The 1970s

The same profile records that he took part in a tango 'resistance' milonga in Beccar during the 1970s [2]. The date is given only approximately, around 1975 [2].

Press profile

On 17 May 2003 the newspaper Clarín published a profile of El Chino Perico written by Irene Amuchástegui [2]. The article was later reproduced on a blog under his name, in a post titled 'Nota en Clarín.com' [2].

Teaching and later career

On 19 March 2011 he was interviewed as Cecilia Bulotta's partner [4]. At that time the two were teaching private lessons together [4].

In 2013 he danced 'Poema' with Paola Tacchetti at Sin Rumbo [3]. In the same year he was presented at PractiMilonguero as 'the last milonguero from Urquiza' [3].

Filmed performances and documentary

His earliest dated footage on a video listing comes from 2006, when he was filmed at Sunderland and with Silvina Damiani [3]. That partner's name appears as 'Silvina Damian' in a separate partner listing on the same site, so the spelling differs between entries [1][3].

In 2020 he was the subject of the short documentary 'A Tango with Chino Perico' [5].

A video listing links El Chino Perico with the following dancers [1]: - Paola Tacchetti - Silvina Damian - Malena Rodriguez - Gladys Fernandez - Cecilia Bulotta - Marcelo Gutierrez - Dipi Kvitko - Diego Kvitko - Pamela Marmo - Katherine Gorsuch - Moscato Luna - Gaston Olguin - Raúl Kiokio - Maria Soledad - Daisy Lombardo - Walter Laborde
