Raúl Bravo
Raúl Bravo (16 March 1931 – 15 September 2023) was a tango dancer and teacher who began dancing in Floresta as a teenager and, by his own account, became a professional dancer in 1952. [2][3][4] He was associated with Antonio Todaro through the Todaro-Bravo method and academies, whose dates sources give differently. [1][2]
Raúl Bravo was a tango dancer born on 16 March 1931. [4] According to a biography, he started dancing at the age of fourteen in Floresta, which places his beginnings around 1945. [2] In a 2009 interview he dated the start of his professional dancing career to 1952. [3]
Bravo's career, as recorded in the available sources, included contest wins at Confitería Dominó, teaching at Academia Dopazo, dancing with D'Arienzo's orchestra in Colombia, and performing at El Viejo Almacén, Edmundo Rivero's club in San Telmo. [2][3] He was later associated with Antonio Todaro in the Todaro-Bravo method and academies. [2] He received the Estrella de Mar award in 1989 and was honoured by Solo Tango in 2011. [2] He died on 15 September 2023. [2]
Early life
Bravo was born on 16 March 1931. [4] A biography states that he began dancing at fourteen in Floresta; the year of about 1945 is inferred from his age rather than given directly. [2]
Speaking in a 2009 interview, Bravo counted 1952 as the year he began dancing professionally. [3]
Career
In 1957 Bravo won a dance contest at Confitería Dominó. [2] The same source records further contest wins in 1964 and 1968. [2]
According to the 2009 interview, around 1960 Bravo started teaching at Academia Dopazo and danced with D'Arienzo's orchestra in Colombia. [3]
In 1963 he replaced Virulazo at El Viejo Almacén, the club owned by Edmundo Rivero in San Telmo. [2]
Teaching and the Todaro-Bravo method
Bravo was associated with Antonio Todaro in a teaching method and a set of academies known as the Todaro-Bravo method. [2] Sources differ on how long the academies operated: one biography dates the method and academies to 1970–1985, while Bravo himself said they closed in 1980. [2] The dossier source for this claim does not detail the content of the method. [2]

A listing records Raúl Bravo as having partnered with the following dancers: [1] - Pepa Palazon [1] - Guillermina Quiroga [1] - Carolina Jaurena [1] - Gisele Avanzi [1] - Edgardo Balatti [1] - Haydée Varoni [1] - Antonio Todaro [1]
The listing does not give dates or contexts for these partnerships. [1]
