Tango and Moscow

Chapter 1 of 3 · 1900–1929

The ban

Guards officers, the Imperial Theatres and the Metropolitan of Moscow.

Tverskoy · Arbat

By the end of 1913 the tango had reached the United States and the Russian Empire.1 The wave of protest reached St Petersburg too, and the war minister forbade Guards officers to dance the tango.1 The directorate of the Imperial Theatres banned it for ballet artists.1

The Church spoke as well: the Metropolitan of Moscow, Makary, raised his voice against the tango, according to a newspaper of 1914.1 The trustee of the Kyiv school district sent a circular asking heads of schools to take strict measures against the teaching of the dance, and the head of the Odessa district issued a similar order.1
